Subject: Final 8 - Game 3 - McMaster/Acadia (incl. boxscore)
In the first game of the evening session of this year's CIAU Men's Final
8, the 4th-seeded McMaster Marauders, a wild card selection, took on the
Acadia Axemen, 5th-seeded, and champions of the AUAA.
In an entertaining, and very hard fought contest, Mac outlasted the Axemen
77-67.
The Marauders jumped out to an early 12-5 advantage at the 13:41 mark of
the first half, as All-Canadian and Moser Award winner Titus Channer found
the mark for 6 points. Back-to-back Doug Doyle and Steve Maga 3's
extended the Maroon and Grey lead to 20-7. Two more long range bombs from
Maga, and the Mac lead was 26-12, with 7:20 to play in the opening 20
minutes.
But the Axemen fought back to narrow the score to 28-22 at the 4:40 mark.
At the same time, the McMaster posts found themselves in a lot of foul
trouble, as Rusic, Spithoff, Akrong, and Rupcich picked up a total of 9
combined fouls. Mac regained their scoring touch, and a Mark Maga "3", at
the buzzer, the team's 5th of the half, gave the Marauders a 10 point
lead, 45-35.
Channer lead all scorers with 16 points, while Maga added 9 points, and an
incredible 11 assists. Daren Spithoff scored 8, and Doug Doyle 7. For
Acadia, Derek Cotton was tops with 13, while All Canadian Jan Trojanowski
had 6 points and 6 rebounds.
The Marauders started the second half as they ended the first, scoring the
first 5 points. But the Axemen responded with 8 points of their own, to
cut the lead to 50-43. By the 14:57 mark, Mac held a 54-45 advantage.
Nine straight points from the Atlantic reps evened the score at 54. By
the midway point of the half, the Maroon and Grey led 58-54.
The teams traded baskets for the next 4 minutes, and the Marauders held a
66-61 advantage with 6:11 to play. The Halifax crowd of 6,144 was worked
into a frenzy as the Axemen scored the next 4 points to cut the deficit to
1, 66-65, with 3:53 on the clock. J.P. Fleurantin fouled out with 1:51
left, sending Doug Doyle to the line for 2 shots, and Mac up 70-67. Doyle
made the first, and Channer grabbed the rebound off of the missed second
attempt. After a timeout at the 1:36 mark, Channer hit a running jumper
to extend the lead to 73-67. Acadia turned the ball over, and were then
forced to foul Maga with 22.9 ticks left. Maga made 1 of 2, but again,
the Marauders grabbed the board, the the game was over.
Channer and Maga led McMaster with 20 points each. Maga was named the
Player of the Game, for his scoring and 13 assists. Spithoff added 12
points for Mac. Derek Cotton led Acadia with 19, while Trojanowski added
18 points and 14 rebounds.
